It's 95 degrees at the campsite, the AC is running, and your RV still feels like an oven. Before you sweat it out or assume the worst, know this: a surprising number of "my RV AC is broken" calls turn out to be something you can fix yourself in ten minutes. Here are the six things we check first — so you can try them before picking up the phone.
1. Start with the filter
A clogged return-air filter is the single most common cause of weak cooling. When it's caked with dust, your AC can't pull enough air to cool the coach, and it runs and runs without ever catching up. Pop the interior AC cover, slide the filter out, and either rinse it (let it fully dry) or replace it. Do this at the start of every season and monthly during heavy use.
2. Check your power source
RV air conditioners are power-hungry. On a weak or shared 30-amp hookup — or a long, undersized extension cord — your AC may not get the voltage it needs to cool properly, especially when other appliances kick on. If you're running on a generator or a questionable pedestal, that's a likely culprit. A simple plug-in voltage monitor tells you in seconds whether low power is your problem.
3. Clear the exterior coils
Climb up (safely) and look at the rooftop unit. The condenser coils shed heat, and if they're packed with leaves, cottonwood fluff, or road grime, that heat has nowhere to go. Gently clear loose debris away by hand or with a soft brush — but never spray the unit down with water. With the shroud off, water can easily get into places it shouldn't, including the inside of your coach, so leave any deeper coil cleaning to a technician. Bent or crushed fins from a low branch can also choke airflow.
4. Give it realistic expectations
RV air conditioners typically cool the inside about 15–20 degrees below the outside temperature — not to a fixed setpoint like a house. On a 100-degree day, low-80s inside may be all it can do. Close blinds, run a vent fan, park in shade, and don't open the door every two minutes. Sometimes the unit is fine; the heat is just winning.
5. Reset and listen
Turn the AC off at the thermostat, wait a few minutes, and turn it back on. Listen: does the compressor kick in with a change in tone, or is only the fan blowing? Fan-only (room-temperature air) points to a different, more technical issue than weak-but-cold air. Note what you hear — it'll help whoever works on it next.
6. Confirm the thermostat settings
It sounds obvious, but double-check you're on "cool," the fan is on "auto" or "high," and the setpoint is actually below the current temperature. On multi-zone or ducted systems, make sure you're not fighting a second zone or a stuck damper.
When it's time to call a pro
If you've worked through these and you're still getting warm air, a compressor that won't start, ice forming on the unit, tripped breakers, or burning smells — stop there. Those point to refrigerant, capacitor, or electrical problems that need proper diagnosis and tools, and guessing can turn a repair into a replacement.
